Welcome to MFPC

Welcome to MFPC. For the 2026–27 academic year, we’ve redesigned the club around director-led programmes and smaller teams, with members choosing where they want to take part. We look forward to working with you. Membership is open to anyone at McMaster, and no experience is required.

As a member, you can watch our films, listen to Ticket Stub Talks, attend club activities and express interest in auditions, production work and other team roles. You can also bring us an idea or request individual mentorship. Whether you want to make something or simply enjoy film with other people, we’re glad you’re here.

General membership comes with no required tasks or regular club-wide meetings. You choose the projects, events and other opportunities that fit your interests and availability.

Join and stay informed

Complete the membership form to join. Membership is guaranteed once you submit the form. The form asks about your interests and experience.

Member announcements are sent by email. There’s nothing you need to do now. We’ll email you when projects, radio opportunities and events are open to members, with the details of how to take part. For questions about an announced opportunity, reply to that email.

Work with a smaller team

Board directors lead MFPC programmes. Directors may approach general members first when recruiting smaller teams for their committee. Members stay informed through email and take part through the activities and teams they choose. Our co-presidents help coordinate the club, support programme teams and shape its direction with the Board.

Ways to contribute

Films and production

Watch MFPC’s films. For announced cast or crew opportunities, follow the participation details in the email. Depending on the film, roles may involve acting, screenwriting, camera work, sound, music, editing or production organization.

Radio

Listen to Ticket Stub Talks, MFPC’s film and filmmaking programme on CFMU. For announced contributor opportunities, follow the email’s participation details. Roles may include researching films, preparing discussion topics or helping produce an episode.

Members can express interest in joining an episode of Ticket Stub Talks to discuss a film or filmmaking topic with the hosts. Reply to your welcome email with your topic idea and availability. Guest spots depend on scheduling, topic fit and the programme’s plans, so we may be unable to accommodate every request. The radio team will confirm the recording details if a suitable opportunity becomes available. Recording appointments are arranged separately from the Sunday broadcast.

Festivals and events

For MFPC activities that interest you, follow the participation details in the event email. When an event team is recruited, roles may involve filmmaker communication, programming, practical arrangements or delivery on the day, according to the event’s requirements.

Marketing and publicity

When marketing opportunities are announced by email, follow the participation details in that email. Roles may involve photography, video, graphic design or writing for a club film, programme or event. Follow the project brief and MFPC’s established identity.

Partnerships and operations

The Partnership & Development Director develops relationships for MFPC programmes. Recruited members may help with research, correspondence or proposal materials for defined club partnerships.

Operations opportunities may involve logistics, schedules, expense records or resource tracking for MFPC programmes. The Operations Director identifies the work needed and coordinates the team.

Mentorship and next steps

Request an individual meeting

Members can request an individual mentorship meeting to discuss a script, seek feedback or work through a filmmaking question. Reply to your welcome email or write to me@willchai.com with what you’d like to discuss, relevant material and your availability. Meetings depend on the availability and experience of the person advising you.

Mentorship provides advice and feedback. You remain responsible for developing and carrying out your project, including arranging its people, funding and equipment.

For questions or help reaching the appropriate person, contact @mcmasterfilm on Instagram.

Example mentorship request

“I’d like to request a mentorship meeting about the pacing of a short script. I’ve included the scene and two questions I’d like feedback on. I’m available Tuesday afternoon or Friday morning.”

Example response to a team opportunity

“I’m interested in the sound role in your production announcement. I’ve recorded dialogue for a class project and can share a sample. I’m available on the dates listed. What preparation would you like me to do?”

Before you take part

Follow the participation details in the announcement email. Reply to that email if you have questions about the activity or need to update your availability.

Applying to the Board is a separate, optional process for applicants with relevant demonstrated experience. It involves a substantial ongoing commitment and requires selection. See the Board page for current openings and how to express interest.

For Marketing or Festival, reply to your welcome email with the role you’re interested in, relevant experience or ideas, and your availability.

After you join

Your membership is confirmed

Once you submit the membership form, your general membership is guaranteed. You do not need a Board position to take part. Choose the activities that fit your interests and availability.

Choose a first step

Watch MFPC’s films or listen to Ticket Stub Talks. When an audition or team opportunity is announced by email, follow its participation details or reply to that email with questions. For help reaching a programme team, contact @mcmasterfilm on Instagram.

Bring a campus project

MFPC connects students interested in film, photography and editing with projects across campus. Members can meet collaborators, gain practical experience and build a portfolio through projects with other clubs and student groups. To suggest a campus project, reply to your welcome email or write to me@willchai.com with a short description and the help you’re looking for.

Stay connected

Look out for member announcements by email. If you have a question or want to suggest an idea, reply to your welcome email, write to me@willchai.com or contact @mcmasterfilm on Instagram. Name the role or programme if you’d like help reaching someone on the Board. Participation is optional; guest sessions and project roles depend on the opportunity. We look forward to seeing what you choose to explore.
