Production Director
Leads an MFPC film from concept through filming, editing and final delivery. Builds the cast and crew, organizes the schedule and remains responsible for delivery.
Responsibilities
- Lead the story, creative direction and collaborative film team.
- Develop an original script, supported script submissions or a volunteer-writer route.
- Plan preparation, filming, editing and final delivery around available people, locations and equipment.
- Review picture, sound, titles and contributor credits, and deliver a tested screening file.
Planning the work
Start by agreeing the work and the people involved:
- Choose a script route and prepare a practical story outline.
- Recruit the initial team and agree responsibilities and availability.
- Map stage outputs, resource needs and dependencies through final delivery, then review the plan with the Board.
Keeping work moving
Review the story, team and next stage with collaborators. Before filming, check the script, shot plan, crew, equipment, locations and permissions. After filming, organise and back up media, brief editors and track cuts and corrections. Keep the plan feasible with resources actually available; sponsorship becomes usable when secured.
Working with other teams
Coordinate with the teams involved:
- Operations Director: Supply equipment, room and logistics needs with dates and dependencies.
- Marketing Director: Provide verified titles and credits, usable stills and permitted material from production.
- Festival Director: Deliver the screening copy, runtime, credits, permission information and technical notes.
Decisions and support
Bring crew gaps, unavailable resources, disputed credits, permission problems or a delivery risk to the Board with options. Seek approval before committing spending or external obligations. Agree any radio contribution with the radio lead.
Leaving a useful handoff
Preserve final exports, organised project files, source media, permissions, credits and the information needed to reproduce the screening output.
Taking part
Members can respond to announced cast and crew opportunities, including acting, writing, camera work, sound, music, editing and production organization.
Directors may approach general members first when recruiting smaller teams for their committee. Agree your responsibilities and availability before taking on a role.
